All the parts in the film are well played, under William Wellman's direction. The latter has a way of making these pictures of the old West come alive. He gives each scene a touch of realism that heightens the illusion of the story.

Schnee's screenplay of the Capra story is best in its use of dialog. Words given the players all have meaning and never appear to be just talk filling in between the action.

Charles Schnee, the script writer, and William A. Wellman, the director, have overdone their contributions... had they lopped off half an hour from their running time... Westward the Women would have been a better picture.

The hardships which provide the exciting incident of Westward the Women are the familair ones of such trips.
