A watchable, if by-the-book, documentary. It’s only a pity that the conventional storytelling hems in such a deeply unconventional director.

Digs deep into the director’s artistry and obsessions while capturing his need for on-the-edge-of-the-precipice creativity (hello Klaus Kinski) and radical optimism. And, frankly, some of the archival material is just astounding.

Interviewees tie themselves in knots of gushing superlatives, but the real insights come from the man himself.

Werner Herzog: Radical Dreamer is a conventional yet crucially curious documentary about popular cinema’s most daring explorer.
