Gomez’s candor and willingness to show herself at her worst and her best is admirable and commendable.

If Gomez chafes, understandably, at feeling like “a product,” My Mind & Me doesn’t escape the notion that it’s leveraging that fame, and the product-like part of her existence, in order to sell it.

Gomez has been open about her struggles with anxiety and bipolar depression, but her honesty about mental health has never been expressed as starkly as in the documentary “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me.”

This is not your usual “famous person” documentary that attempts to paint a larger-than-life picture of its subject. Rather, the film uses the phenomenon of celebritydom to focus on the realities of a society that is alienating for many.
