A must-see (that reveals) Mika Ninagawa's talent to realize her vision in a masterly way.

Ninagawa presents the life of Lilico in a parallel with the lives of the geishas of old times, that had to do everything their "Mom" told them, while having to reach extreme measures in order to look beautiful according to the standards of the era.

Themes of the transience of fame and its corrosive effects on the soul are as clear as mud, but Ninagawa can't help fetishising her star's doll-like beauty.

Helter Skelter examines the dark side of beauty privilege through Ririko, a top model whose surgically constructed perfection begins to crumble under industry pressure and personal instability. With striking visuals and an intense atmosphere, the film captures the psychological toll of fame, though some narrative choices and repetitive public narration lessen its emotional impact compared to Helter Skelter. Despite its uneven execution, it remains a provocative and visually compelling exploration of identity, obsession, and the cost of perfection.
