This is the closest any film has come to re-creating Anuja Chauhan’s universe, very few can do the insider-outsider divide with such acuteness, both sharp and warm.

In "Murder Mubarak," director Homi Adajania tries to deliver a film in that spirit, but comes up with an overlong study of characters navigating the class system that doesn't match the quirky comedic tone with which the story is told.

Murder Mubarak is a major all-over-the-placer that veers from broad comedy to touching character moments to hyperventilating melodrama to meta-commentary to social critique with the occasional instance of brutal, gory violence.

Just because Murder Mubarak features Deven Bhojani in a supporting role, it didn’t have to mean that it should look, sound and be performed like a forgotten episode of Baa Bahu Aur Baby.
