A superb Daniel Craig drinks and dopes his days away in Mexico and becomes besotted with a young man in Guadagnino’s poetic reinvention of Burroughs’ grimy, semi-autobiographical novel.

Luca Guadagnino always has a singular vision in his work and while not every element works, you’re always glad he put it out there.

It’s as if [Daniel Craig]’s reminding you that he proved himself as a gifted, versatile – and occasionally unglamorous – actor long before 007 called on his services.

Guadagnino appears to be actively wasting screen time in a way that takes some getting used to: scenes dawdle, and though the film is perpetually beautiful, agonising mundanity is its modus operandi.
