The End of St. Petersburg is a great picture -- by far the greatest that has yet come out of Russia.

As a photographic record of the reconstructed events of the Russian Revolution it is superb. As a dynamic narrative -- as a cinematic drama -- it is loosely connected, jerky, and often flat.

Display(s) a real passion for the plight of the proletariat, feeling less like propaganda and more like communist apologia, focusing less on the politics of the Bolsheviks and more on the basis for the Revolution in the first place.
