Critics consensus

“The One plays more like a video game than a movie and borrows freely from other, better sci-fi actioners, burying Jet Li's spectacular talents under heaps of editing and special effects.”

Wong's efficiently creepy Final Destination was as much memento mori as teen disposal unit, but in The One the maze of death leads only to exhaustion.

This sci-fi/martial arts hybrid has the stale aura of a product assembled out of bits of other action movies.

Li speaks and acts entirely too much here.

RTAlternate EndingMay 17, 2022

It has the goods where it counts: the climax is superb, coming as close as an American film could to capturing the breatheless, airborne energy of the fight sequences in Li's Chinese-language work.
