Storyline

Sammy Hogarth, a vaudeville comedian who now has his own TV show, is a ruthless egomaniac who demands instant obedience from his staff and heaps abuse on those in lesser positions than his. His most vituperative behavior, however, is reserved for his weak-willed brother, Lester, whom Sammy has hired as his assistant but whom he really uses as his whipping boy.

The Comedian is impressively alert to the power of the unspoken. The whole cast is quietly expressive of shifting, ambivalent feelings.

The world is reaching out to gay romance right now. But it takes a lot of reaching to like Tom Shkolnik's The Comedian, or even to understand what it is saying.

Shkolnik knows what it is to be shrugging along in the city with not enough money in your pocket, and no idea what to do with yourself.

The Comedian does have moments that feel remarkably true to life... In this instance though, realism does not make for compelling drama and one is left longing for a spark of energy.
