Moana

The beguiling spirit of this South Pacific fable remains enchanting, even if this live-action adaptation never becomes all it needed to be.

This is an unimaginatively faithful remake that leaves the original intact, complete with songs co-written by Lin-Manuel Miranda. But the replacement of animated beings with live actors manages to ramp up the folkloric kitsch considerably.

Watching them sail across the sea and deliver the heart of Te Fiti is an amazing odyssey. Watching their live-action counterparts run it back is a slog.

There is hope that Moana will serve as a lesson that some stories simply don’t need to be told again – at least, not without significant or clever changes.
