Although Kevin Costner no doubt wishes to be Hayes Ellison, he actually more resembles Mr Pickering – he’s got us all to go to Horizon based on false advertising with the hope that our enthusiasm will build the film we ultimately want to see.

Costner is interested less in mounting a grand, old-fashioned western and more in trying to embody America in all its contradictions, with its shattered and patchwork families, its heroes, its psychos, its drifters and charlatans and hapless leaders.

For all its ambition and likeability, Chapter 2 often plays like prestige TV (that wouldn’t win awards)... but it’s thoroughly enjoyable TV at least.

This second chapter improves upon what has come before it and holds onto my excitement for what’s next with this series.
