Storyline

At America's elite MIT, a Ghanaian alum follows four African students as they strive to graduate and become agents of change for their home countries Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. Over an intimate, nearly decade-long journey, all must decide how much of America to absorb, how much of Africa to hold on to, and how to reconcile teenage ideals with the truths they discover about the world and themselves.

MIT students profiled in ... Arthur Musah’s heartfelt documentary ... Sante from Tanzania, Fidelis from Zimbabwe, Billy from Rwanda and Philip from Nigeria ... try ... assimilating into American culture while maintaining their own cultural identities.

“‘Brief Tender Light,’ with all its cultural complexities, offers an access point for worldwide viewers willing to look beyond lazy stereotypes and reductive interpretations of not just Africans but fellow humans in general.”

Despite being inspirational, Brief Tender Light falls short of being unflinching and emotionally engrossing.

Although Brief Tender Light doesn’t have a clear answer for its viewers, it does reinforce the very American value that each individual has the power to create opportunities for change.
