Thematically similar to the Herzog classics Fitzcarraldo, Aguirre, the Wrath of God, and Grizzly Man, it is yet another portrait of a seemingly demented hero who, in his so-called madness, illuminates the absurdity of society around him.

In Herzog's dedication to film art he denies us the simple pleasures of story involvement, of suspense, of interest in the people on the screen, of sexuality.

Kaspar Hauser is one of the most fascinating of films. At his best, Herzog is like no other film-maker I know.

...a meditation on innocence, corruption, and supposed civilization.
