Storyline

Illuminating the challenges often unseen beyond the toys, trees and tinsel, people in a small Irish village reflect on their difficult relationships with Christmas. "So This Is Christmas" is a heartwarming and charming portrait from award-winning director Ken Wardrop, which perfectly exemplies his innate ability to tell the stories of ordinary people, depicting their thoughts, feelings and experiences in an empathetic way. Beautifully rendered in 35mm, the film is authentic and compassionate, and a valuable addition to the Irish documentary canon.

These people’s stories are all gently compelling, in much the same way as they would be if you got into a conversation with any of them on the bus or in a bar.

There’s clear comfort with the interviews as the conversations offer a cathartic means for the participants to work through their stories

I struggle to see how anyone wouldn't be able to relate to the people in this film in some way. It is an absolutely beautiful depiction of these subjects that was executed extremely well.

The gulf between the giddy expectations around Christmas and the frequently deflating reality is explored by Wardrop with tenderness and empathy.
