Foy’s is a febrile performance which gets more jittery as the film goes on. It’s a powerful piece of acting, so utterly convincing that I sympathised. Then I didn’t.

It’s a career-best for Foy, who will doubtless win many awards. I hope the unnamed bird gets one too.

Foy’s internalized performance conveys how important it is to reconcile with grief, not to abandon it nor place it on an out-of-the-way emotional shelf.

Anchored by a terrific performance by Foy, director Philippa Lowthorpe and her co-writer, acclaimed novelist Emma Donoghue, have crafted a sombre, yet life-affirming drama that also boasts some gorgeous and truly evocative cinematography.
