Storyline

A cargo ship embarks on its final voyage of the year to resupply Inuit communities in the far north of Canada. During a storm off the coast of Labrador, the ship’s cook is found murdered in his cabin. With no way to identify the culprit among the twenty crew members, suspicion falls on Alupa, an Inuit mechanic and close friend of the victim. Unfolding in reverse, from the investigation back to the night of the storm and the murder, the film transcends the boundaries of a traditional whodunit to probe deeper questions of race, class, and sexual desire.

Labrador should be seen on the big screen to appreciate the stunning cinematography by Mathieu Laverdière. Be patient with this gem, it’s a truly mesmerizing sit and boasts impressive performances by the two leads.

At sea, no one can hear you scream. ... Only reveals so much, while spinning its meditative tale of death and love, of which the latter strangely manages to prevail.

[An] intensely slow-burn, the story as muted and reserved as the icy location in which it plays out. But those who succumb to its subtle rhythms will be rewarded with an emotionally rich, beautifully acted character study.

Labrador: Autopsy of Silence is a meticulously crafted fixation on the nuances of silence and isolation, a documenting of the long, dark rhythms of life in the Arctic and on a cargo ship.
