It’s an open question as to whom the film insults the most: the principals; the public; or you, the viewer, from whom so little has been demanded.

Omar Sy and Sara Giraudeau are wonderful together, building engaging situations that mirror life’s joys and sorrows without becoming so dark or angry that they overshadow the optimism of the story.

In the end, French Lover offers mild entertainment value, but it's hardly a film I'd revisit. If you're in the mood for something light, easy and utterly forgettable -- a no-brainer way to fill two hours -- it might suffice.

Maybe one of the smallest victories, to be honest. But a victory nonetheless.
