The film is at times quite beautiful, but the interwoven drama and overlapping character arcs are leached of subtlety and humor.

This beguiling Brazilian drama offers a twist on the fairy tale format, as a reclusive fisherman's simple wishes expose the dark secrets of his fellow villagers.

There's something quietly touching about this ensemble, especially in how the actors give depth and soul to material that can feel more like a collection of whimsical ideas than a fully shaped story.
