Critics consensus

“Liberally adapting Emily Brontë's classic story with a heavy dose of carnality and chic stylization, Emerald Fennell's Wuthering Heights might not be the stuff of high literature but it is a visually vibrant pleasure.”

How can a movie that wants so badly to titillate and arouse be so tame?

This is a horny, hollow reworking, but that seems to be entirely what Fennell is going for.

Everyone is 12. Why has Emerald Fennell adapted one of the more chasmic and ambitious tragedies in English literature into a poppy, gooey, thuddingly literal work of sexy fan fiction? Everyone is … you get it.

Don’t see this movie expecting it to be ‘the greatest love story of all time’, because it’s not. But it might be one of the most moving tales in classic literature, uniquely expressed in hyper-stylised, meta-referential, cinematic glory.
