Holloway

A bruisingly honest documentary that discovers that, though the building is no longer a functioning prison, it has lost none of its emblematic power and significance for these six women.

It’s niftily co-directed by Daisy-May Hudson and Sophie Compton, who are savvy enough to include scenes of the women objecting to the camera and establishing exactly how they will tolerate regular film-making intrusions.

The focus is the recent past and the here and now. The effect is hugely powerful. The film is hard to shake.

All the women are going through a process of change. As the prison decays, so do the structures that have constrained their lives.
