Storyline

A sideshow can be a magical place. For those who live and work there, it can be a safe haven. For Cleo, her role in the family-run exhibit is clear: as the 88th generation of proud, bearded women, she follows their legacy of sword-swallowing, and her overbearing mother, Lady Andre, wants Cleo to be an obedient daughter and stick with tradition. But outside the show tents of Paradise County is a big world, and when Cleo’s fresh ideas for their sword show aren’t embraced, and she clashes with her mother, she gets the itch to leave her talented fringe family to find love and perhaps a new normal that doesn’t include facial hair.

I wish Alberta VFX artist Jody Wilson had a bigger budget to realize her vision in this first feature, an inviting fairytale about a woman who runs away from her destiny as the family’s new bearded matriarch.

Set in a heightened world that feels separated from real life by 180 degrees, The Bearded Girl is a fairy tale that deals with real life issues of self-acceptance, legacy and rebellion in delightful, heartfelt ways.

The Bearded Girl puts its own uniquely coiffed style on the hairy situation that is becoming who you are meant to be, on your own terms.

A charming story about the ways in which we are both beholden to and repulsed by the traditions and family obligations laid at our feet, The Bearded Girl is sure to speak to young girls in a way that will truly matter.
