Fwends

...Fwends is best when diving into how the duo have drifted apart. But these resonant moments are rare...while painfully realistic and charming at times, is more often closer to overhearing cringe conversations on a tram.

For all the cutesy touches, Fwends is a sad film, hiding its sadness beneath a determined display of high spirits.

Director Sophie Somerville keeps the sturdy performances refreshingly natural and pulls off some remarkable single takes (kudos to cinematographer Carter Looker) as the two wander about town, their dialogue captured by some very good audio work.

For every wince-inducing (and overly long) rap about crashing-out over all the ills of the world come genuine moments of reflection on what should drive us in a world where being and feeling “nothing” have become the norm.
