Storyline

We can't address the environmental crises of climate change and biodiversity loss if people don't care about nature, and it all starts with stepping outside and looking up. Through the lens of four inspiring women, The Birdwatchers aims to explore and break down some of the barriers preventing people from accessing nature. This film is a love letter to the world of birds, and a rallying cry for people to protect it.

Bechis, a former political exile from Argentina with a clear anti-colonialist bent, may be angered by the Guarani's plight, but his movie - like these people - is contemplative, patient and forcefully determined.

Birdwatchers is impressively filmed and never less than interesting. If it has a weakness, it's that this is a familiar sermon: Save the rain forest. Respect its inhabitants.

Momentarily, it feels as if the Guarani could win this fight and maybe give it to globalization on the shins.

Birdwatchers is a nicely crafted piece of storytelling that is sad, but fascinating.
