Storyline

"Bagong Buhay" is a short experimental film that dispels the common belief that packing up and moving to a new place will magically improve one's quality of life. The film challenges this presumption by portraying two contrasting ways of life through objects and locations, encouraging viewers to think critically about the complexities of what makes a better life. In the Philippines, it's believed that relocating to a new area will bring about positive changes in one's existence. True satisfaction is a complex and multifaceted notion, and "Bagong Buhay" encourages us to ponder that relocating to a new place is not a surefire way to attain it.

Critics consensus

“Breathing New Life to the genre, this excellently acted brooding horror thriller marks a propitious debut for John Rosman.”

Amid the dumper-truck of post-Covid lockdown-inspired films, very few take disease and pandemics themselves as their central focus. So John Rosman’s stripped-back but effective debut is a sobering flashback to those incubative early days.

Lovers of hard-core horror with elements of science fiction and allusions to body horror, rejoice. [Full review in Spanish]

It’s not just the complexities of its characters that are compelling, but Rosman’s ability to drop narrative bombs that cataclysmically alter the genre and narrative direction.

The accomplished leads add depth to their archetypal roles as hunter and hunted, making this a most unpredictable tale in which we're never entirely sure who to root for.
