The bravura technical achievements of this richly textured, dynamically photographed period piece are not always matched by a screenplay that can, at times, feel a little laboured.

Heysel '85 has all the ingredients for a gripping historical thriller. Mihai captures the growing panic and confusion through atmospheric filmmaking and strong performances from Braeckman and Simoni.

Despite generating some tense moments, Heysel 85’s fictionalised approach to real events threatens to cheapen a tragedy.

It's a harrowing film that boasts excellent performances, silky filmmaking, and a gripping real-life story that is often forgotten amongst football's biggest and saddest tragedies.
