La Perra

A movie to cuddle, hold close, and heal with.

So much of "La Perra" is so patient and trusting of the audience that its later reach for low-hanging melodramatic fruit is frustrating.

La Perra’s impact is quiet and cumulative, but it lingers. It’s not a film of clear-cut revelations and changes of heart, but its understanding and appreciation of female solitude is honest and delicately nuanced

The depiction of rural island life are the real draws to La Perra, as the parallel story of trauma and reconciliation treads in familiar territory. Maybe director Dominga Sotomayor should have made a documentary about Santa María’s animal life instead.
