Storyline

A gang of small-time criminals has everything under control in the quiet little municipality of Bikkert, a place where no one would ever imagine anything sinister happening behind the scenes. But things are about to change when the arrogant mayor announces a new construction project in the very forest where Benny and the Brits have hidden a body. Now, the gang must act fast, before a construction site becomes a crime scene.

Critics consensus

“A clear-eyed look at an extraordinary subject, Mayor makes essential viewing out of one politician's quest to preserve dignity in the midst of bureaucracy.”

Deft editing and unexpectedly affecting music choices make for an engaging portrait of the kind of impassioned and dedicated politician who seems in short supply right now.

Smart, yet somewhat one-sided and process-orientated portrait of a man and his municipality.

In its gently ironic way, the film depicts an urban centre keen to be treated, and run, as a genuine place to live, a town like any other.

The imagery is disturbing but effective to accurately immerse one in this environment and feel what's really at stake in this fight.
