Everything Else Is Noise

Nicolás Pereda delights in taking the piss out of his male characters, and by extension the audience.

As Tere will be reminded throughout the rest of this wry, knowing, minimalist comedy of manners, she’s always at the mercy of other men’s schedules, preferences, and selective ears.

Its intimate focus on women, art, and the minutiae of everyday life gives Everything Else Is Noise a distinct identity, even if its minimalist approach ultimately left me unsatisfied.

In Mexico’s macho culture, it’s refreshing to see the film’s female characters see through the men’s studied masculinity and respond not with angry vitriol but with bemused amusement. What fools these mortals be.
