Storyline

At the foot of Europe’s largest glacier, seven Icelandic siblings once lived in deliberate isolation, dedicating their lives to observing ice and nature long before climate change had a name. Their abandoned farmhouse becomes a living archive, animated by photographs, objects, and a 16mm film that restores gestures, spaces, and a vanished way of being in the world.

Most of La Pietà is mysterious and disquieting, a glimpse into a horrific but perversely loving familial dynamic.

“Piety” is an extreme movie that will have some clutching their pearls and foaming at the mouth with outrage, and others will declare it to be the second coming of Peter Greenaway without a mean streak.

La Pietà is never dull, but the onslaught of bonkers weirdness runs thin. It's gets a slight recommendation for artistic intent. Subtlety is a virtue ignored here.

Not for the faint of heart or belly, this tale of true smother-love is a cotton-candied labial dystopia you won’t, you can’t, you shan’t soon forget.
