...it has rightfully become a cult favourite thanks to an excellent cast, including Rose McGowan, Judy Greer, Pam Grier and Carol Kane, and its dreamy, hyper-stylised world that mixes ’90s cynicism with 1950s fashion and the neon lycra of the ’80s.

Lame shock scenes, crucial plot points inserted without setups, and an unsuccessful attempt to exploit the camp value of some actors cast in minor parts are the least of the problems in this black comedy.

The producers of this film, which depicts teen-age girls as an assemblage of negative stereotypes, are female. Can females practice misogyny?

Greer’s manic comedy chops shine as she almost instantly becomes too arch and conspicuous for even the wicked conspiracy leader (Rose McGowan).
