The film misses Burton's odd charm, is largely devoid of humour and, in spite of Hathaway, Depp and Bonham Carter, is mostly a waste of time.

[A] bland, overblown, characterless spectacle.

While little touches here and there can't help but excite the senses, the lack of a nuanced story or intriguing characterizations makes maintaining interest for all two hours utterly ridiculous.

Assuming that the literary work is only a starting point for inspiration, as happens here (the story completely deviates from the theme of the book of the same name), the narrative remains halfway without being entertaining enough, much less profound.
