t’s essentially a series of races, crashes and audacious stunts.

The whole thing is shot with verve by the ever-reliable Douglas Slocombe, who captures runaway train scenes with fluidity and character business with care.

…It’s hard to believe that avowed Ealing classic wasn’t that warmly received on release; Charles Crichton’s gentle comedy has taken decades to become a bona-fide classic…makes fun of the conflict between old and new in the most agreeable way….

The comedy isn't nearly as biting as in other Ealing efforts from the period.
