The movie is worth seeing, for Gere's transitions from highs to lows, which are so convincing that we really do feel in the presence of mental illness, with all of its seductive interior logic.

The film opens strongly, but by largely neglecting Jones when in his depressive periods and taking the view that love conquers all and justifies everything, it dodges the important issues it raises.
