It's the performance of young Fiona Kay that turns Vigil into a near masterpiece.

Those who have the patience to stick with this languid coming-of-age story will be richly rewarded with an occasionally dark and intriguing experience.

Aesthetically dazzling, it's driven by characters and how they react with the world around them.

Alun Bollinger's absolutely stunning photography brings all this grimness to life in a unique way; never before have I been so aware of the effectiveness of a 16mm blow-up to 35mm. The earthiness of the grain is so essential to what works in Vigil.
