Storyline

For the first time I am animating hand-painted engraved cut-outs on a full-color background. The film is mood-filled: A duel scene in a snowy forest, obviously the morning after a masquerade ball. Harlequin lies dying, while Red Indian walks away with the wings of victory. The woman between them appears, cat-masked. The mask dissolves away. Her spirit passes into the face of the sun upon the sun upon the sun flower. But Harlequin cannot escape death. The blue world engulfs him.

Masquerade pulls off this final act of subterfuge just well enough that I do believe some will come away suitably shocked and impressed - and maybe that's enough for this one to warrant a mild recommendation.

Its dumb plot ends with an even dumber twist.

Masquerade sticks too closely to the home invasion formula for too long, unable to muster any suspense along the way until a confusing third act.

There’s a lot to admire about Masquerade, which certainly makes excellent use of the French Riviera, but its pacing, tone, and screenplay are lacking
