Denis' film is a highly confused-and dramatically unconvincing for the most part-attempt to come to grips with this crucial historical episode.

Beautifully shot, brilliantly acted, and unfolds at a gradual pace to increase the emotionality and tragedy befalling those involved.

Hard as it is to relive that era, credit writer/director Mathieu Denis for digging up a story long relegated to the dustpan of history -- but hopefully never repeated.
