MacKay's movie has a consistent visual tone of almost drowsy drabness, but that's the point: This is the world Sam will learn to see beyond and swim clear of.

Even though the story may seem slight, as coming-of-age tales go, it packs a surprising amount of emotional power and wisdom.

I can't emphasize this enough, Julia Sarah Stone is a find. Far cry from a Nickelodeon starlet-in-waiting, Stone has the screen presence and acting chops to carry a movie.

The coming-of-age tale is familiar territory, but MacKay gives this one a sensual texture that feels like you're immersed in a really thoughtful short story, with a measured pace that gives us time to understand Sam's thoughts and feelings.
