Gabin is one of the really massive personalities of films: he makes his silences count and his mere presence felt, he has the kind of mind and hand you would count on in tight places, he has both solidity and dash.

The film has marvellous atmosphere and a fine cast, but the material, which involves brutal, uncontrollable passion seen in a social framework, turns oppressive, and at times Gabin is a lump.

It is simply a story; a macabre, grim and oddly-fascinating story.

It has a fairly grounded treatment due to the way in which Renoir builds the fatalistic tragedy about adultery and the human desires traveling through the most equanimity paths of poetic realism. [Full review in Spanish]
