Aimed straight for the gooseflesh, it strikes directly into the centre of the target.

Despite featuring a notable performance by Brigitte Helm, it is a conventional and rather dull silent melodrama of late German expressionism. [Full review in Spanish]

It eventually bogs down in conventional melodrama, but the stylish production shows German studio craftsmanship at its peak.

The acting is not only artistic, it is also as realistic as can be possible in such a film.
