Critics consensus

“American Desi ends up being rather amateurish and doesn't mine its subject matter as thoroughly as it could.”

American Desi is not a radical new brand of cinema. It just tells a straight story of reconciling with one's identity in a simple and at times naive and predictable manner.

Suffers from a lack of sophistication and polish.

The main flaw ... is its willingness to sacrifice the intrinsic fascination of its subject, and the charm of its talented cast on the altar of cultural correctness.

Extremely funny whether or not you are an American Desi.
