The Draft

Is there a sense of diminishing returns eventually, as the genre is endlessly remixed and sampled? Will horror eat itself? Not yet, says The Draft! -- or at the very least, it will make the act of autophagia a highly entertaining one.

The payoff is all part of the fun, as Fuadi and his cast push Indonesian horror into a new direction.

</i>The Draft!</i> stops aiming for any actual scares and contents itself with throwing as many genre nods at the wall as it can, moving onto the next without waiting to see if any stick.

What I see as the film’s strongest suit, however, is Fuadi’s evident love for the genre. The Draft! sees the director critiquing and celebrating horror’s quirks and stereotypes in equal measure.
