At a time when teen outsiders are having their time in the spotlight, Stargirl feels like a relic, and a prompt for Disney to do a better job at capturing contemporary high-school culture.

Stargirl teaches Leo everything and then teaches herself a thing or two herself as an afterthought. It's hard to work out who it's aimed at, unless teenage boys are suddenly turning to Disney for lessons in life and love.

Stargirl, as essayed by 16-year-old Grace VanderWaal, the ukulele-wielding 2016 winner of America's Got Talent, has a puppy-dog earnestness to recommend her.

VanderWaal charms in her square-peg role, and the musical numbers effectively showcase her singing and strumming skills, with a cover version of Thirteen by cult rockers Big Star lending the safe and chaste coming-of-age story a little indie cred.
