An enlightening film could be made about the Ottoman Empire in the days before World War I, that particular place at that particular time, but The Ottoman Lieutenant isn't it.

"The Ottoman Lieutenant" is all over the map in terms of tone, genre and acting styles.

We can smell the rancid coats of paint on this attempt to whitewash history.

it has some issues with the historical side of its story but the romance is not bad and not overly sweet. It works on the surface as a romance film and looks stunning while doing so.
