Stylishly decorated and generating all-important sympathy for a character living precariously in two worlds, director Kentaro Hagiwara's feature debut gets the drama right but is let down by visual effects that are sometimes unconvincing.

It falls victim to a few anime adaptation woes but nothing damning.

Still, though flawed, there's a lot to like about Tokyo Ghoul, and it's easily one of the better films in the never-ending stream of manga adaptations

"Tokyo Ghoul" is a competent adaptation that benefits much from the original material and its acting, and I would love to see how a bigger budget would be implemented in the action scenes of the (bound to come) sequels.
