Storyline

Hailing from Aarah in Bihar, Anarkali is an item girl, famous for her vocals, suggestive dance moves and innuendo laden lyrics. She enjoys her stardom and revels in the lusty glances. The singer acknowledges that she is no saint and even makes peace with the hatred she evokes among civilised society but what she refuses to tolerate is being exploited in public by an influential politician.

Anupama Chopra

RTFilm CompanionSep 6, 2018

The film's plot was a little contrived but Pankaj Tripathi's unassuming presence, Swara Bhaskar's brilliant performance as Anaarkali and the thundering climax made it one of my favourites.

Namrata Joshi

A unique, well observed, raunchy musical that reiterates that no means no.

Shubhra Gupta

RTThe Indian ExpressDec 6, 2017

Anaarkali manages to hit many marks. Bhaskar gets a lead role worthy of her. Das is a new director to watch out for. And more than anything else, it is a 'ladies-oriented' film. Enough and more, in these dismal times.

Swara Bhasker's choices in this film, her performance and the manner in which Avinash Das has conceptualised ... Anaarkali all add up to a unique moment in Hindi cinema.
