Director Olivier Assayas offers a political thriller that's rich in detail, but primarily invested in human cost.

Wasp Network is a haphazard film that can feel like less than the sum of its often glittering parts. But it unsheathes its sting just often enough to keep you on your toes.

Visually, the appeal of Wasp Network is undeniable - all warm, colorful, open spaces, elegantly shot and peopled with beautiful actors. The intrigue could have used some of that heat, too.

Regardless of the lack of stakes, it is still hard to imagine that given the talent involved, Wasp Network is not better just by pure force of personality.
