It's a great triumph of the film that while you're watching it you don't think, oh that's a ridiculous contrivance...

Byrne and Hawke, both easygoing, naturalistic performers at their best when they barely seem to be acting, have an utterly persuasive connection.

There are truths about the lies we tell ourselves. It ends very satisfactorily, but dares to leave at least one narrative thread dangling conspicuously.

Hawke also performs a solo version of “Waterloo Sunset” that makes this rom-com worth your time.
