The Will

Maple and her team succeed in giving us a compelling self-portrait of Harlem, which is still a pretty rare thing to see.

With its rough-hewed realism, “Will” is remarkable not so much for its craft as for its philosophical depth in portraying the tensions between a struggling individual and his community, which can be both supportive and enabling.

If you are a Devine fan, then this movie is required viewing. All the performances are natural and perfect for that era. The film often feels like a combination of a play, a Sid Davis cautionary film with a secular, secret Jesus proselytizing mission
