Love Letter, Shunji Iwai’s early masterpiece, delivers a moving and quite meditative exploration of the subjective effect of enunciating signifiers and the inability to do so.

Love Letter is a carefully crafted, sad film that has the right balance of just about everything to bring the viewer in and lead them slowly to caring about the leads and their situations.

I really enjoyed this film. It actually took me back to that ’90s era of filmmaking, especially in Asia.

Love Letter is sweepingly romantic, but not in the way one might expect. It’s not a film about falling in love in the traditional sense, but the quiet comfort of the moments that linger and the ways they shape the rest of our lives.
