It's clear that effort went into the making of Elm Lake. The blood and gore effects are acceptable, the story could have only used a few rewrites, and the cast is strong. Yet it's so close to being watchable that it's almost a crime that it falls short.

... simply too many "seen that before" moments and not enough "well, that was cool" surprises to make it a strong recommend.

In the end, House on Elm Lake is a dull, rote, mess of a film, only occasionally enlivened by some blood and screams.
